With a wooden strawberry pyramid you can cultivate many specimens in one place. This variant is particularly recommended for small gardens. The project is explained to you in this guide.
In a nutshell
- Strawberry pyramids offer space for many strawberry plants
- are built up high
- Use weatherproof and robust woods
- Build a basic structure in the form of a pyramid
- Distance between the pyramid steps 25 cm
materials
Before you can build your strawberry pyramid out of wood, you need the right materials. The variant of the strawberry pyramid presented in this article has a height of 150 centimeters on a base area of one square meter. That is, the dimensions of the pyramid are 100 x 100 x 150 centimeters, which in terms of size lends itself to a variety of gardens. The individual steps of the pyramid are 25 cm apart, which means that you have six steps for the strawberries at the end. The following materials are required for this:
- 4 x wooden boards in the dimensions 10 x 2 x 150 cm
- 4 x wooden boards in the dimensions 10 x 2 x 100 cm
- 1 x square timber with the dimensions 10 x 10 x 40 cm
- 100 to 120 x self-tapping stainless steel steel screws (M5.5 or M6) with a length of 30 mm
- 8 self-tapping stainless steel screws (M5.5 or M6) with a length of 100 mm
- 8 to 16 self-tapping stainless steel screws (M5.5 or M6) with a length of 15 mm (depending on the number of metal bracket holes)
- 4 stainless steel angles in the dimensions 30 x 30 mm or 40 x 40 mm
You will also need more wooden boards for the individual steps. As the pyramid narrows towards the top, you will need to cut the individual boards to the correct size. Use ten centimeters wide and two centimeters thick for the boards. The need for wood for the individual steps is quite high. For the bottom step you already need four boards with the dimensions 10 x 2 x 100 cm. You have to reckon with a material requirement of at least ten or twelve meters for all levels. So stock up on enough wood.
Note: You can have the boards cut to size at the hardware store for a fee in order to get the required length.
Suitable wood
Robust and weatherproof woods are particularly suitable for the implementation of the pyramid. It doesn't matter if you are domestic or tropical woods want to use. The biggest difference is of course in the price. Tropical woods are significantly more expensive because they have to be imported. You can also use old Euro pallets or wooden panels that you have left over. All you have to do is cut it to the dimensions you need. If you want to purchase wood, the following types are recommended:
- Douglas fir
- larch
- Black locust
- Oak
- teak
- Azobé
- Bangkirai
Note: When choosing the wood, make sure that it is untreated. They do not release any toxic pollutants into the substrate, which in turn could get into your organism via the strawberries.
tool
In addition to the materials, you must of course not forget the tools you need. The following list gives you an overview of the tools you will need to build the strawberry pyramid:
- Saw of your choice
- Cordless screwdriver
- Attachment for cordless screwdriver (select according to screws)
- Tape measure
- Protractor
- pencil
Strawberry pyramid: building the basic framework
Once you have the materials and tools you need, you can start building the strawberry pyramid. The following guide will help you:
Make a frame
- Saw squared timber into 4 pieces of equal length
- each section must measure 10 x 10 x 10 cm (cube)
- serve as corner points of the basic frame
- place the 10 x 2 x 100 cm boards in a square
- Place cubes in the respective corners
- Screw the boards to the cubes
- do not screw the boards together
- the finished frame should measure 100 x 100 cm
Build a pyramid
- now use the 10 x 2 x 150 cm boards
- they form the 4 edges up to the top of the pyramid
- cut both ends of the 4 boards at certain angles
- lower end: 60 °
- upper end: 30 °
- The angles are sawn from both corners of one long side
- Cut the entire width of the wood (10 cm) at an angle
- at the end, one long side of the board must measure 150 cm
- it is the visible outer edge
- the other is the shorter inside edge
- fix the 4 boards to corner cubes at the 60 ° angle
- use 2 screws (100 mm) for this
- You should now be able to see the pyramid
- Then fix the pyramid tip using metal brackets
- use 15 mm screws for this
- Place metal angles on the outside of 2 boards
- screw
- repeat on each side of the pyramid tip
- Place the angle slightly offset in height
- Screws shouldn't meet
- the basic structure is ready
Tip: Determine the angles even more precisely by placing the individual boards for the pyramid corners on the frame and center beam. You can use the protractor to determine exactly what angle you need for a steadfast pyramid.
Fastening steps: instructions
The basic structure is now in place. Now it's time to cut and secure the individual steps in which the strawberries will be planted. The stand is considered a single step. That means you only need to adjust five levels. The distance between the individual steps is 25 centimeters:
- Measure the distance between the pyramid sides at step height
- Cut boards to the required length
- Cut boards at the ends at the required angle
- each step requires a different angle
- Screw the boards between the pyramid corners
- incline the boards at a 45 ° angle and fasten them
- 16 screws are required for each step
- this allows you to fix the substrate
- then place, fill and plant at the desired location
frequently asked Questions
Depending on the variety or species selected, strawberries need a full sun to partially shaded location. Since strawberry pyramids can be planted on either side, it is a free location that is spoiled with sun from morning to evening. Since the sun also shines on the pyramid from the east and west, even the more north-facing specimens get enough sun.
Yes. Since there is no direct contact between the substrate and the ground, you can easily place the pyramid on a suitable terrace or large balcony. It is also possible to fix the pyramid on a board that is equipped with rollers. This allows you to move the pyramid much more easily, for example to place winter strawberries more advantageously.
If you have enough space in the garden, you can stack square wooden frames of different sizes like a pyramid. The largest wooden frame is used as a base, filled with substrate and then a wooden frame a few centimeters smaller is placed on the ground. Four to six levels are easily possible with this method and can be used immediately.
