The alang-alang grass, the Atlas fescue, the bearskin grass, the blue fescue, the blue ray haver, the tufted feather grass are also referred to as grass species. But which type of grass do you use when laying out a lawn, and which type of grass should you avoid as much as possible?

In addition, you can find the right lawn mixture for every location in specialist shops. Here, however, the general rule is to keep your hands off cheap lawn mixtures. The anger is usually preprogrammed. Real quality, as far as the seeds are concerned, can be found in the somewhat more expensive lawn seed mixtures that the trade sells. The German ryegrass, meadows, is recommended in any case Bluegrass and the ostrich grass. These types of grass require more or less attention, the vertigo grass being an average represents what the need for care and the durability of the grass species listed last concerns.
If you use very conscious lawn mixtures that consist of the most diverse types of grass, you should also pay attention to what the grass types are then used for. Is it a lawn that should thrive in the shade, or a lawn that is haunted by a small gang of rascals, i.e. a lawn for play, or a lawn that is used for recreation. Utility lawn is in any case less sensitive than the pure Ornamental lawn.

Ryegrass

Often it is German Ryegrass or Lolium perenne, as a runners forming clump grass, an excellent grass for any heavily used lawn. The lolium is deep green with shiny stalk leaves on the underside, grows quickly and well and regenerates are usually excellent when used, which is why there are over 100 varieties in Germany as seeds authorized. Disadvantages: needs a lot of water and a lot of nutrients, is prone to various putrefactive diseases.

Red ostrich grass

Often you will find that Red ostrich grass or Agrostis capillaris, a type of grass that is already quite old in terms of breeding, which is suitable for ornamental lawns and lawns for use. The red ostrich grass is usually not very dark and fine-stalked, has neither a high need for nutrients nor a high water requirement, it can be mowed well and can also be polluted. Unfortunately, the winter color of this bouquet grass is not very attractive.

Lichen grass

That too Lichen grass (Agrostis stolonifera) is one of the well-known species, it is suitable for ornamental lawns and golf turf. Accordingly, it forms fine stalks, is resilient and of the grass types that can tolerate the deepest cut. The grass tends to be lighter in color and has a slightly higher water and nutrient requirement than the red ostrich grass. The winter color is also not very nice, and the lichen grass is prone to snow mold.

Fescue

The Fescue, Festuca arundinacea, which, with a medium nutrient requirement, is well suited for lawns that are also used in dry areas. However, this clump has an effect

Sheep fescue

The next fescue that Sheep fescue or Festuca ovina, is a collective name for several subspecies. They are all cut-resistant, but not very resilient clump grasses with bristle-like leaves that require little water and nutrients, but also do not grow very tall. They have name suffixes such as common sheep fescue or fine-leaved fescue, 18 varieties have been tested and approved in Germany.

Red fescue

Of the Red fescue, Festuca rubra, is in turn a collective name, mainly using the subspecies Horst red fescue, branch red fescue and short branch red fescue. With its bristly stalks, this fescue is an important grass in domestic lawns, but is also suitable for ornamental lawns. It needs little nutrients and moisture and is very easy to cut, many of the more than 100 varieties available can also be deep-cut.

Meadow panicle

the Meadow panicle (Poa prantensis) is approx. 50 varieties are permitted, including fine-leaved and broad-leaved ones, all of them resilient and easy to cut and with medium water requirements, a good grass for lawns for use and hard-wearing lawns. However, it needs a lot of nutrients, germinates slowly and then forms rhizomes (underground runners).

These varieties, with their numerous sub-varieties, are not all grass types that are mixed into lawn seed mixtures. Even if this doesn't make the selection any easier, you can be sure that you will find the right types of grass for your dream lawn.
