Cultivation in the glass
The amaryllis is without a doubt the classic among winter flowers for the living room. Everything this plant needs is in its bulb. The thicker and stronger it is, the more flower stalks can be expected. However, not every variety is suitable for cultivation in appropriate glasses.
Even before buying an onion, it should be clear whether you want to pull the knight's star in the conventional way in a pot or in matching glasses. For the latter should be best only
short-handled respectively. small-flowered Varieties are used. Amarylli that are no taller than 35-40 cm are perfectly suitable. With taller or large-flowered varieties there is a risk of the glass tipping over.Even if this bulb flower is mainly kept in soil, growing it in a suitable glass vessel also offers some advantages. On the one hand, you can practically watch it grow, even the roots that are otherwise hidden. On the other hand, there is a multitude of options for arranging the amaryllis with different materials and decorative aids.
The right glass shape
Anyone who is familiar with the knight's star has probably heard of amaryllis glasses or vases. They are perfect for driving or growing onion plants. to draw, so also the knight's star. This is due to the special shape of these vessels.
- Amaryllis glasses usually round
- lower part is bulbous
- narrow towards the middle
- open upwards in the shape of a bowl, similar to an hourglass
- high stem should prevent the flower stalks from tipping over
- the onion is placed on the narrowed point
- The special shape of the glasses should protect onions from moisture

Such glasses are commercially available in clear or colored glass. For example, the color of the vase can be adapted very well to that of the amaryllis flower. combine with it, if you want. In addition, the glasses can have different patterns, such as cuts, grooves, different structures, but also paintings.
However, these special glasses are usually expensive. Alternatively, you can of course also use glasses from your own fund to grow an amaryllis bulb, provided that they are as similar as possible in shape or form. similar proportions. In addition, they should be stable.

Pull the onion in the jar - instructions
The best time to draw or drive a knight's star is from October to February both in soil and in glasses. Advancing because the amaryllis not permanent in the glass can stand and must be put in soil at the end of the flowering period.
- for driving or Draw water into the bulbous part of the vessel
- If necessary, fill the lower part with small pebbles beforehand
- Water should be boiled and ideally be free of lime
- a little charcoal in the water can help prevent rot
- Only give fertilizer in low doses

An alternative to water is planting in moss. The advantages of moss are that on the one hand it can store moisture well and on the other hand it offers the possibility of additional decoration, for example with small stones, berries, fabrics, wood or Christmas decorations such as balls, stars, cinnamon sticks, small figures and much more more. Bare, gnarled branches as accessories can also underline the attractiveness of the amaryllis flower.
Knight stars arranged in a jar on moss should not be poured directly; the moss should only be moistened a little every one or two days. The whole thing should then be as warm and bright as possible, and preferably also sunny, in the apartment. During flowering, the knight's star would like to be a little cooler, this can extend the flowering time a little. Avoid direct sun during flowering if possible, it would make the knight's star wither faster.
Tip: Gloves should always be worn when handling this bulb because it is highly poisonous. Both flowers and leaves, and especially the onion, are poisonous.
care
Maintain amaryllis in glass jars
The top priority when caring for the amaryllis is Protection of the onion from moisture or Putrefaction. It is therefore important to ensure that the onion is never damp or even wet. But it shouldn't dry up either. To prevent this from happening, the water level must be checked regularly and a little more water topped up if necessary. The need for water increases when the roots begin to grow and one more time as the flower stems and leaves grow.
The water level should always remain roughly the same. In addition, the water should always be clear. At the first sign of cloudiness, it must be replaced to prevent rot. In order to avoid cloudiness in the first place, it is advisable to keep the water completely clean two to three days to exchange.
There are usually two to three large flowers on a flower stem. As soon as the first flower has dried up, it should be removed. The stem remains untouched until it too has yellowed and withered.
After flowering into the ground
A permanent cultivation of the amaryllis in the glass is not possible and also not recommended. When all the flowers and their stems have faded, the summer growth phase begins; the bulb must now be taken out of the jar and placed in a pot Earth to be planted. The substrate used should be well permeable.
- Put the onion no more than half, or even better, a third in the soil
- Avoid kinking or squeezing the roots when inserting them
- Water and fertilize amaryllis normally for at least two months
- Only administer watering water through the coaster
- Or put in a saucer filled with water twice a week
- If no more water is absorbed, remove excess water
- Reduce watering quantities and frequency from around July
- From September, stop watering completely
- Stop fertilizing as early as August
Now the plant goes into that Resting phase over, the leaves gradually wilt, and as soon as they are completely withered, cut off. During the six-week rest period, place the onion in a cool, dark and dry place Place with temperatures around 15 ° C before they are brought to bloom again in the glass or pot can. As a rule, they will pass after planting six to eight weeks until the next bloom.
