operation area

The motorized tiller has several sharp and curved chopping knives, which cut into the ground in the meantime and thus shred it. Not only is firm and hard soil loosened, it also has a fine crumb structure and is optimally prepared for sowing. In addition, the device can be used for weed use weeding. However, tillers are not equally suitable for every soil: The machines are ideal for working on sandy to slightly loamy soils. For very heavy, very loamy or clayey soils, however, they are only suitable if they are dry and you are using a particularly powerful model. You should not use the garden hoe on heavy, wet soils, as this can lead to compaction and silting.

Solid soil can be loosened with a tiller.

Tip: Since such heavy soils are not suitable for planting anyway, you should improve them or, at best, remove them and fill them up with humus topsoil.

Area size and duration of use

The size of the area to be worked and the useful life are also important parameters that determine the optimal type and size of the tiller.

  • Motorized tiller, electric or battery operated: good for smaller garden areas or already worked or light soils
  • Motorized tiller with petrol engine: suitable for larger garden areas or fields or for areas that first have to be reclaimed

The period of use, on the other hand, determines the rental price. You can rent the device by the hour from many providers, which is useful for small gardens, but also expensive. For larger areas or Renting for several days is recommended for projects in which you want to turn an area into a garden.

Tip: If you only want to try out the tiller once or if you just want to work on a bed, ask a neighbor. Perhaps he will lend them such a device for a small consideration.

Requirements for the device

If you want to borrow a motorized milling machine, the device should meet the following requirements:

  • Drive: electric, with battery or with petrol engine
  • Power: at least 1000 watts or more
  • Number of knives: the more knives, the finer the tillage
  • Working width: depending on the area width
  • Depth setting: different depths of the hoe spur depending on the type of soil, moisture and activity (hoeing or weeding)
  • Attachment of additional devices: e.g. B. Cultivator or plow for further work
  • Forward and reverse gear: for easier handling
  • Adjustability of the handlebar: in height and to the side, depending on body size
  • Vibration dampening: restricts the transmission of vibrations to the arms, protects the muscles

By the way, you don't necessarily have to rent a large machine, as there are now powerful and lightweight small tillers too. The motor power of these tillers is usually between 800 and 2000 watts and they are usually no wider than 25 centimeters. With their low weight of up to 15 kilograms, they are also easy to use by women.

Drive type

The various types of drive have specific advantages and disadvantages that must also be taken into account when choosing a loaner:

  • Electric tiller: needs a cable connection, possibly with an extension (cable drum)
  • Cordless power mill: independent of the cable, the battery only lasts a few hours and needs to be charged
  • Petrol: very powerful, but also extremely loud and heavy

The most environmentally friendly method of digging around the garden is and remains the spade, but the cordless or electric garden milling machines follow immediately afterwards. However, these can only be used to a limited extent, for example because the socket has to remain within reach or the battery drains too quickly. This is why gasoline tillers are best for large and difficult-to-work areas.

Possible problems

Also, when borrowing the tiller, keep in mind that you may be held responsible for any damage and repairs made by the owner. That means, if the machine breaks down or is damaged, you'll have to pay for it - which in turn can be as expensive as buying a new power tiller. With some rental companies you can therefore take out insurance or a disclaimer that can cost up to ten percent of the rental price. In addition, you have no way of knowing who worked with the device before you and how it was treated: With a little bad luck, it can happen to you, that the machine gives up on you because of a previous damage and you pay for it even though you can't help it have to.

Don't forget to reserve

In addition, the tiller may be out of stock when you want to rent it. You should therefore plan your gardening work carefully and reserve the desired device in good time - i.e. a few days in advance. You can now easily do this online with many providers by simply clicking on the Go to the homepage and fill out a form under the appropriate tab (often it says “Rent”) and send. Of course, you can also call the rental company and make the reservation by phone.

frequently asked Questions

Where can I rent a tiller?

You can rent a motorized milling machine either from a larger hardware store such as Hornbach, Hagebau, Obi, Bauhaus or Toom or from a tool rental shop near you. Just ask at the information desk in the hardware store or search the Internet or in the yellow pages for a local tool rental shop.

When is it better to buy a tiller?

However, renting such a device is not exactly cheap; depending on the type and size of the tiller, you should expect a price of at least 40 to 50 EUR per day. Therefore, if you use them regularly two to three times a year, it can be worth buying. However, if you only want to use the device once or just try it out, then borrowing is recommended.

What does a tiller cost when you buy it?

How much you spend on the tiller depends on its type and size. Larger models with gasoline engines are more powerful, but also significantly more expensive than those that are electric or can be operated with rechargeable batteries. While you can get an electric motorized tiller from 70 EUR, a petrol model costs at least 250 EUR.
