Buddleja Buddleja comes from the fig family. He's not with the real one lilac related, even if they are very similar in the shape of the flowers. With its long flowering time, the colorful panicles and the uncomplicated nature, Buddleia has won many lovers over the years. Not to forget the delicate floral scent of its flowers. The duration of flowering can be extended a little with a little help.
Heyday
When is the flowering time of Buddleia?
In contrast to real lilac (Syringa) counts Summer- or Butterfly lilac (Buddleja) to the late bloomers. He takes his time with his grand entrance, in which he shows off his white, pink, red, blue or purple flowers. In all species, they sit at the ends of the branches or the shoot tips. The most common types in home gardens are Buddleja davidii and Buddleja alternifolia (Alternate or narrow-leaved buddleia).
You see the species much less often Buddleja albiflora (white butterfly bush) and Buddleja globosa
(Ball Buddleia). They are still relatively unknown Buddleja Buzz hybrids (Dwarf Buddleia), new and still relatively unknown varieties. But when does the butterfly lilac bloom? The main flowering time of most summer lilac species is between July and September, although they differ somewhat within the individual species.Buddleia species
Buddleja davidii and Buddleja alternifolia
- Buddleja davidii, best known representative among the summer lilacs
- shows its flowers from July to September
- partly they stand until October or in bloom until the first frost
- a single flower does not survive the flowering period
- more changeable Buddleja alternifolia seen less often
- also known as hanging summer lilac
- Usually blooms a little more profusely but shorter than Buddleja davidii
- is in full bloom from June to July
- Flowers of both types give off a sweet, honey-like scent
Buddleja globosa and Buddleja albiflora
The spherical and lamellar, yolk yellow flowers of Buddleja globosa are rather atypical for a butterfly lilac and are only very rarely found in home gardens. This shrubby lilac blooms from July to September just like the white blooming summer lilac Buddleja albiflora with its white, tart, aromatic flowers.
Buddleja Buzz hybrids
The fast-growing shrubs of the so-called Buzz hybrids remain comparatively low, so that their flowers are particularly effective in pots. Buzz hybrids also bloom from July to September.
Tip: The narrow-leaved Buddleja alternifolia comes into its own in a solitary position, while Buddleja davidii can also be combined very well with other flowering trees. Underplantings with color-coordinated annual plants or perennials look very good on both species, regardless of when they bloom.
Extend flowering time
Extend the flowering time in a few simple steps
The blooming period of the single bloom does not last from July to September. Therefore it is important withered flowers to remove regularly and consistently. This means that the flowering period can easily be extended into late autumn. Wherever dead flowers have been cut off, new ones will follow. This also has the advantage that uncontrolled spread via seeds is prevented.
In addition, the correct cut promote the abundance of flowering. You should know that Buddleja davidii exclusively on this year's and Buddleja alternifolia blooms on biennial wood. As a result, the latter should only be thinned out a little after flowering or a few old shoots should be cut out for rejuvenation. It looks different with Buddleja davidii the end. It can be cut back around March, if necessary a little more.
