Get rid of blowflies from your apartment: build your own trap

Blowflies prefer to lay their eggs in carcasses or in rotten foods. If they suddenly appear in the apartment, that's not a good sign. It would then be wise to find the cause that attracted them as quickly as possible. In addition, there are a number of effective ways to get rid of them. A special trap that you can even easily build yourself is very effective.

Blowflies in the apartment

We usually have no problem with most flies. The blow fly, however, inevitably triggers disgust and defense mechanisms in many people. One of the reasons for this is that many species are extraordinarily large and have an unusual metallic sheen. Above all, however, the disgust is probably caused by the fact that we know that these flies prefer to lay their eggs in carcasses and not completely fresh food. They are mainly attracted by the intense smell emanating from carcasses and certain foods. They perceive this smell outside the house and then penetrate the rooms. For the blowflies this is a clear indication that this is an ideal place to be able to lay eggs. The larvae of the animals then feed on the decaying or spoiled residues.

Note: During their metabolism, the blowfly larvae release certain products that can affect human health. If, for example, meat has been attacked by the flies, it is no longer suitable for human consumption.

Of course, it is best not to have any blowflies in the apartment at all. Probably, however, this cannot be prevented 100 percent all the time. The risk of infestation can, however, be reduced considerably. The handling of food, leftover food and, above all, food waste is important. These should never stand around freely in the room, but always be covered. It is even better to place them under a glass or porcelain lintel. wrap them in plastic wrap. Meat and fish should always be stored in the refrigerator and only be removed from them for a very short time. The bin for organic waste must also have a well-fitting lid. With all measures it has to be taken into account that a blowfly is attracted by the smell. The spread of the odor must therefore be prevented.

Note: Decaying animals such as dead mice brought into the house by a cat are a particular problem. The cat must therefore be checked before entering the house to see whether it has an unsolicited gift with it.

Fly trap

But if it does happen and blowflies have penetrated the apartment, everything should be done to get rid of them as quickly as possible. • Washing-up liquid
• a sharp knife or other pointed object

First of all, you need to clean the glasses well. Above all, it is important to free the outside of all adhesions. In particular, there should be no jam leftovers or similar on it. After cleaning, proceed as follows:

• Pour apple cider vinegar up to a quarter into a glass
• Add a few drops of washing-up liquid
• Cover the top with plastic wrap (cling film)
• Pull the film taut and secure it to the edge of the glass with a rubber band
• with a knife approx. Cut 1.5 cm long slits in the foil
• Glasses in the room or distribute in the apartment

The smell of the apple cider vinegar that pours out of the glass attracts the flies. You suspect it is overripe or rotten fruit to feast on. They climb into the glass through the slits in the foil and help themselves. In the vast majority of cases, however, they can no longer find their way out. The flies are trapped in the glass. The probability is very high that sooner or later you will drown in the vinegar-washing-up liquid mixture. After a while, they can simply be tipped into the toilet and flushed away. It is important that you replace the traps regularly - until you can no longer see any blowflies.
