Felling a tree or having it felled involves a lot of effort and costs. Here we show the areas in which they operate.

In a nutshell

  • there are different causes for the necessary fall
  • Approval is required in any case
  • Costs and fees are calculated according to type and meter
  • professional felling is recommended
  • Proper disposal must also be considered

causes

Various reasons can be responsible for cutting down a tree. Including:

  • Age and baldness
  • Development of a property
  • Infestation of diseases or parasites
  • rotten wood
  • Storm damage
  • Laying of lines
  • too great height

Whenever a tree is sick or damaged in such a way that it poses a risk or no longer complies with regional regulations, it must be felled. However, trees can also simply stand in the way if the area is used for another purpose.
Nevertheless, they have an important ecological function. They serve as a habitat and source of food, have a decisive influence on the climate and the oxygen content as well as the purity of the air. Careless precipitation should therefore not take place.

Approval fees

In any case, it should be found out whether an official permit is necessary before the case. Differences can be found, for example, in:

  • of the kind
  • the height of the tree
  • of the region
  • Use of the tree by protected animal species
  • local and temporal conditions

Felling a tree or having it felled professionally requires a permit, which must be applied for and paid for at the relevant authority. The costs for this are between 25 and 100 euros, depending on the location, if it is necessary at all.

Note: Between 01.03. and the 30.09. the fees for the permit application are higher. Expect 80 to 120 euros. If possible, it is cheaper to fell the tree outside of this time.

Type of precipitation

When cutting down a tree, a distinction is basically made between two types. On the one hand, the complete precipitation. The trunk is left in one piece and falls over as such. However, this is only possible as long as:

Felling a tree in winter
  • the tree is small enough
  • it does not cause damage to fences, buildings or other vegetation
  • the environment is free and secure

The costs for this amount to around 20 to 40 euros per meter.

The second variant is piecewise felling. The tree trunk is shortened from top to bottom to an appropriate length. The size of each section depends on the environment. The following advantages and disadvantages must be taken into account:

  • Often the only solution for taller trees
  • higher cost
  • Higher effort
  • ideal if there is little space around the tree
  • Piecewise precipitation facilitates disposal

A price of 30 to 40 euros per meter applies for this measure.

Have a tree felled?

Hobby gardeners often want to use a chainsaw themselves to cut a tree. From a height of four to five meters, however, this is neither recommended nor safe for laypeople. In addition, some utensils and tools are required that are usually not found in the household and are only required for infrequent work at height.
Including, for example, a correspondingly high ladder, which is essential if you often have to cut waste in pieces. In addition, the person has to be secured, which is difficult with very large trees and a lack of experience. Professional felling is therefore advisable in many cases.

Note: If possible, you should prefer professional felling. The costs seem higher at first, but there is also greater security. In some situations - for example above a certain height - only competent persons can do the job. However, this factor can again differ regionally.

Type of tree

When trees are felled, the type and hardness of the wood also play a decisive role. Conifers grow faster, but therefore also have a lower density and hardness.
Deciduous trees grow more slowly, but are often harder. The greater the degree of hardness, the more difficult and time-consuming it is to felling. Therefore, the costs are also higher.

Remove the root

One of the biggest challenges with or after a tree has been felled is removing the roots. It does not matter whether it is a shallow root or a deep root. Especially with older trees, the roots are so firmly attached to the ground that the stump is difficult to remove. Even with smaller and younger trees, the stump including the roots can cause considerable problems. A residue-free removal without experience and corresponding knowledge is therefore usually associated with a lot of effort and can also cause damage.
A professional removal, on the other hand, has the advantage that the root is removed quickly and safely. The costs for this amount to around 75 to 175 euros and depend on the size and degree of difficulty.

Dispose of the green cuttings

What must also be taken into account when felling a tree is the disposal of the green cuttings. As a rule, there is not enough space available in your own garden to store or compost it.
When this is the case, transportation often becomes a problem. Larger pieces of the tree trunk or branches have a surprisingly high weight, especially with deciduous trees, and can therefore hardly be moved on their own. With taller trees it is therefore often necessary to sever the parts. This in turn involves considerable effort.
This shows once again that professional felling is the more practical and simpler choice. Transport and disposal cost between 100 and 150 euros. However, there are also alternatives available for disposal. Including:

  • Chop twigs and branches and use as mulch
  • Process trunk and thicker branches into firewood
  • sell or give away the trunk to self-collectors via classified ads

Animal owners or people with a stove, a fire bowl and chimneys take on the transport. Resources are conserved and money is saved.

frequently asked Questions

How can you save money when you cut a tree?

For example, by removing the branches that can be reached yourself. Selling or disposing of the green cuttings and wood independently also reduces costs.

What does tree felling in the allotment garden require?

It is important to get information in advance from the respective club and to take the relevant regulations into account. This also includes, for example, clarifying the approach for the removal - because in gardening clubs not every path can be used without permission.

How can the trunk be processed?

Wood is a valuable raw material. If the tree is not attacked by pathogens or pests or is rotten, it should be used. As firewood, scratching post, bark mulch or cut into slices, it serves good purposes. Pieces of it can also be used as insect hotels.
