What is needed for finishing

You need a pad for finishing. This can be the shoot of a quince, a cherry, a pear or another stone fruit tree. Which base you use for the refinement depends on the stone fruit variety.

In addition, you will need edible veins from the stone fruit tree that you want to propagate or whose positive properties you want to promote.

Cut precious vines

Edelreiser are annual shoots that you cut in winter, depending on the type of fruit. They must be at least 8 to 12 inches long.

The vines are hammered into damp sand over the winter and stored in a frost-free room.

The finishing methods

The most important refinement methods for stone fruit are:

  • Oculation
  • Goat foot refinement
  • Bark plugs

Oculation

The base and the noble rice should be of the same thickness. They are cut diagonally several centimeters long. The cut has to be made very evenly so that the two strands fit together perfectly. On the outside of each traveler there must be one

eye to be available. Then wrap the finishing point with raffia.

Goat foot refinement

For this purpose, a wedge is cut out of the thicker base. The thinner noble rice is cut to a point and driven into the wedge. Both parts must be as close together as possible. Here, too, the finishing point is wrapped with raffia.

Bark plugs

This refinement method can only be used if the bark of the base can be loosened without any problems. This can be the case from April to summer. The bark of the pad is cut open from top to bottom and bent slightly apart. The noble traveler is pushed so deep that at least one eye is covered by the bark. Bast is also used for fastening.

How you can tell that the finishing was successful

The refinement of the stone fruit is successful when new branches or roots have formed at the refinement point. This usually lasts until the next year.

Tips & Tricks

As a beginner, you should initially limit yourself to grafting, as this type of finishing is the easiest. When you have more experience, try the more advanced finishing methods.
