Note: Do not fill the wine barrel completely with soil
If you fill your wine barrel completely with soil, not only will it be expensive, but the barrel will also gain significantly in weight. Filling the entire wine barrel with soil only makes sense if you want to place a very large plant in it, the roots of which need all the space. However, if you only want to plant flowers in your wine barrel, you don't need the full depth.
Here are two ways to make the wine barrel "shorter":
- Half fill your wine barrel with dry wood or mulch and then cover this layer with wood or chipboard so that the bottom is more or less flat. It doesn't matter if it's a little uneven.
- Put a wide flower pot in your wine barrel. Put wooden panels on top.
1. Waterproofed the wine barrel
So that you can keep your wine barrel for a long time, you should line it so that the moisture from the plants cannot damage the wood. To do this, line your wine barrel with pond liner, which you let overlap a little over the edge.
If you want to have your wine barrel outdoors, it also makes sense to paint it with a weatherproof paint on the outside.
2. drainage
Give about five inches Expanded clay(€ 16.36 at Amazon *) into the wine barrel. This serves as a drainage layer.
3. Fill with soil and plant
Now fill your wine barrel with soil to about 15 cm below the rim. Then put your plants in and fill in the rest with soil.
4. Cover the foil
You can hide the protruding film under overlapping ground cover or hanging plants, or you can cover soil and film with moss or mulch.
The wine barrel as a mini pond
Instead of filling the wine barrel with soil and planting it, you can also fill it with water and build a pond out of it. To do this, line the barrel with pond liner, use large stones and pots to build different levels in the barrel and then place pond plants in planters on these levels. Fill with water and your pond barrel is ready.
