A protected, partially shaded location is ideal
However, the Japanese maple only shows its splendor in a location where it feels comfortable. The question of the right place is of great importance, ultimately develop some varieties their splendid autumn colors only in the brightest possible spot with lots of light, while others cannot tolerate direct sunlight. Therefore, before planting, be sure to read the description on the variety label. In no case can you go wrong with a bright, partially shaded and if possible sheltered place - the Japanese maple reacts very well, especially to sharp easterly winds sensitive.

With regard to the soil, the Japanese maple feels most comfortable in a nutrient-rich and very well drained and slightly moist substrate. The soil ideally has a slightly acidic to neutral pH value, which can also be improved by adding peat and sand. However, calcareous substrate with a high alkaline pH value is not tolerated and should therefore be replaced accordingly.
Tips
Plant the Japanese maple preferably near a body of water, for example by a garden pond. There is a higher humidity, which among other things, the leaf tip drought - this is expressed in brown leaf tips - can prevent. If you also put a few koi and goldfish in the pond, the picture of a Japanese garden is perfect.
