The location determines the choice of plants

Of course you want to choose your plants according to your own taste. There is little objection to this. However, cover that in a dry location you need to water a water-loving plant very often, and sun-seeking plants in the shade will not show the desired flowering. So choose the plants that are comfortable there and you will get the most benefit with the least amount of work.

Plant ground cover

Where there are no plants, weeds thrive. If possible, leave little or no areas free in your bed, then weeds hardly stand a chance. As a gap filler, you can use so-called ground cover very well. They usually stay quite low, but spread out well. If necessary, however, they can also be easily cut back.

You can harvest many plants throughout the summer if you do not immediately cut off the whole plant but only parts of it. This applies, for example, to Swiss chard and spinach, but also to so-called pick salad. Here they do not harvest heads, but individual leaves. Perennial vegetables are another alternative.
