The right time to separate the children

In principle, it is possible to separate the KIndel at different times because not frost-hardy agaves in the house overwintered, some Agave species but can also be cultivated in the house all year round. For copies in pot It is not uncommon for the Kindel to form during the winter rest phase; to minimize stress for the plants, it is then possible to separate them together with repotting after wintering. If possible, select dry weather phases in spring and early summer so that all interfaces can dry off well for at least a few days after they have been cut off. With smaller ones Agave species the Kindel should be at least 5 cm tall, with the larger species about 10 cm.

Separate children with their own roots

Some children grow in agave pots at a certain distance from the mother plant, but are still connected to their roots. In these cases, undermine the root connection and cut through neatly with a sharp knife or planting scissors. Wait at least a few hours or even days to allow the interface on the mother plant to dry off. Then you can replenish the missing substrate. Beware of too frequent watering: the mother plant with its reduced root mass should not be watered more, but rather a little less to compensate.

Separate children sitting directly on the trunk

With some agaves, the so-called Kindel form directly on the plant stem and initially without their own roots. With these offshoots, you should make sure to separate the Kindel deep enough so that their leaf rosette does not fall apart. At the same time, however, you must not go too deep into the stem of the mother plant cut. You can also treat the interfaces with some charcoal dust for safety. The Kindel are rooted about 1 cm deep either in special Cactus soil or in a mixture of ordinary Potting soil and one of the following substrates:

  • Pumice gravel
  • Lava sand
  • Quartz sand

Keep the substrate for the root-forming child evenly moist after about a week. In principle, however, only water very sparingly, otherwise agaves will be quick disease-like symptoms demonstrate.

Tips

If a large species of agave flowers after more than 20 or 30 years, it usually causes the plant to die. Under certain circumstances, however, you can avoid this natural death of the plant if you separate off all the children in good time and move the splendid specimen to another planter repot.
