Soil and location

Soils that are poor in nutrients and well drained of water are ideal for creating a wildflower meadow. The leaner the soil, the easier it is to create and maintain a meadow from native plants. Nutrient-rich locations offer the competitive grasses of the Fettwiesen good growing conditions. Such a location leads after a few years to the fact that the grasses displace the wildflowers. If the substrate has a high nutrient content, you should remove the top layer of soil and mix in sand or fine gravel. A place in the sun that is as free from walking as possible is suitable as a location.

Preparations

An open ground is a prerequisite for the wild flower seeds that need light to germinate. Sowing directly into an existing lawn is not promising. Dig up the lawn completely to create an open area. If the lawn is heavily compacted, loosen it up deeply. After digging, wait about three weeks and repeat the process. As a result, the fresh seedlings that have developed from the seeds in the soil dry up. Unwanted species are reduced. Pour the area generously in front of the

sowing.

Collect seeds from wildflowers growing by the roadside. Seed mixtures for wildflower meadows are inexpensive. Since they mainly contain annual species, the bloom is over after a short time.

Advantages of self-collected seeds:

  • regional origin
  • native species
  • colorful biodiversity from annual and perennial plants

sowing

Sow the seeds in spring between April and June. During this time of year the temperatures are optimal for the seeds to germinate quickly. Later sowing can lead to fast-growing grasses spreading over the area and taking away the light from the wildflower seeds.

A few grams of seeds are usually sufficient per square meter. Mix in the seeds sawdust or dry sand. This enables even sowing. The wildflowers of the meadow communities are light germs. After you have distributed the seeds over the area, you should cover them with a board or a Lawn roller press down well. After sowing, the area must not dry out.
