In the case of continuous rain in early autumn, please place the fuchsia in the bucket under a canopy.

Cut the fuchsia before packing

Before putting them in their winter quarters, give your fuchsias a vigorous one Cut back. The effort is worth it in two ways. In the course of wintering, the subshrubs shed their leaves anyway. At the same time the fall Secateurs diseased and pest-infested shoots are sacrificed. How to do it right:

  • Best time: before the first severe frost (in most regions of Germany at the beginning of November)
  • Cut back: Thinning out sick, weak branches, cut back healthy branches by a third
  • Defoliate: strip off all the leaves
  • Dig out: Dig up the fuchsia in the bed and place in a pot with unfertilized coconut soil

Fuchsia in the tub can overwinter in the container and are spared the stress of transplanting.

Winter fuchsia in a dark and frost-free place

Because fuchsias do without their leaves, the summer sun worshipers can overwinter in the low-light location. Alternatively, a light overwintering is possible, but there is a risk that your fuchsia will wear out through the growth of long horny shoots. The rule of thumb is: the darker, the cooler. The following options are shortlisted:

  • Cellar and windowless garage with temperatures from 2 ° to 8 ° Celsius
  • Conservatory, stairwell, bedroom with temperatures from 3 ° to 12 ° Celsius

Are all potential winter quarters in the house occupied? Then you can overwinter your fuchsias in a special tent with a frost guard. The translucent construction is made of UV-resistant Greenhouse film(€ 15.40 at Amazon *) and is available in different sizes. There is also a place here for other cold-sensitive flower beauties, such as Dipladenia or Mandevilla.
