Weighing up: is it worth fighting?
For many gardeners, the bindweed is considered to be weedthat does not fit into the flawless and uniform image of the garden and has to be removed. Most of them don't care that this weed also has many advantages.

- The best strategies for fighting bindweed
Whoever wants to fight it should know that it is extremely stubborn. It has roots that are meters deep and likes to reproduce via runners and root shoots. Often it is hopeless to destroy them in the long run. Even chemistry is no more promising here than mechanically working the soil.
Method # 1: dig up bindweed and remove roots
Well worth a try, you might think? Then try out this tried and tested method. But consider beforehand: digging usually only stifles the growth of the bindweed. The plant rarely disappears forever.
That is how it goes:
- start in spring
- Pull out aerial shoots by hand when the earth is moist
- with Digging fork Dig the earth up to 1 m deep
- Put the soil together with the fine roots through a sieve
- Pick out and destroy roots
Method # 2: cover the winch
Covering the winch with a black film is visually less appealing:
- first dig up the earth
- remove larger parts of the plant
- Lay the foil over it
- Place bark mulch or stones on top to weigh down
- Wait 1 year
Method # 3: Add new soil
It is really effective if you take away the earth that has grown up with the bindweed and replace it with new earth. This is especially useful if the bindweed grows in the bed and is difficult to remove from there.
Other methods of control
Here are some more ideas:
- Mulch the earth thickly
- destroy with vinegar and salt
- Kill young specimens with boiling water
- Tagetes or Phacelia plant in the immediate vicinity (drive away bindweed)
- regularly chop the earth, thereby destroying the roots
- in the lawn: mow regularly
- Use of herbicides
Tips
Those who do not remove the roots after chopping up have to expect that the bindweed will then spread more strongly (via root shoots and runners).
