Methods of Propagation

You might be surprised, but there are several ways to get new offspring to most flower bulbs. Some paths are labor-intensive, require skill or take a long time to bloom. Fortunately, you have a free choice between:

  • Propagation by means of bulbs
  • Division of the flower bulb
  • Seed propagation

Propagation by means of bulbs

This method is most commonly practiced in private gardens. Because almost every flower bulb sooner or later forms small bulbs. Although they are connected to the mother onion, they can easily be detached from it. There are a few steps you can take to encourage onion formation. This is how this propagation method works ideally:

  1. Cut off the open flower head as soon as possible in the second flowering year at the latest. However, leave the stem and leaves on until they wither on their own.
  2. Repeat this procedure in the following year as well.
  3. Dig the onions after flowering

off, the leaves should be withered. There should now be small bulbs on the large flower bulbs.

  1. Carefully break the onion off the mother onion or cut it off with a clean and sharp knife. The roots must remain intact.
  2. Put the little onions in the ground. Pay attention to optimal Planting depth and plant spacing.
  3. Water the onions well.
  4. If the young flower bulbs want to bloom in the following growing season, remove the buds early. Instead, the energy should be used for onion growth.

Tips

Cuts or breakages after separating the bulbs should be treated with a fungicide to prevent fungal diseases.

Division of the flower bulb

This method is only mentioned here with a few key points, because it is quite demanding and not the first choice in the hobby garden:

  • first large onions excavated and clean
  • Scale onions are broken up into individual scales
  • every dandruff is treated with fungicide as a preventive measure
  • then they are planted upright and covered with some earth
  • Shell onions are cut lengthways
  • the round mother cake is halved at the end of the onion
  • after the fungicide treatment, both halves are planted

Seed propagation

From a few Flower bulb varieties seeds can easily be obtained. To sowing in spring they need to be stored in a cool, dry place. They are sown directly in the bed and kept moist. However, this method has a significant disadvantage: the plants obtained in this way often make us wait years for their flowers.
