Propagation via cuttings is easier. It also offers the advantage that identical leaf cacti are grown. In the sowing is not sure what the flower colors and shapes will look like later.
When sowing seeds, you need to be patient. Until germination can depending on variety many weeks go by. If you propagate Epiphyllum from cuttings, the cultivation is much faster.
Sow epiphyllum
The sowing takes place in spring, because then the long days begin and it is longer light. Sow the seeds on coconut gum or coir pellets. It must not be covered, as Epiphyllum is a light germ. Carefully spray the seeds with water.
An indoor greenhouse is best suited for sowing because you can keep the humidity constant in it.
Set the Growing pots(€ 9.70 at Amazon *) or the greenhouse in a warm, bright place. But they shouldn't stand directly in the sun.
Propagate Epiphyllum using cuttings
- Cut cuttings in spring or summer
- about 15 cm in length
- Let the interface dry for a long time
- Put cuttings in prepared pots
- moisten something
- place warm and bright
Choose healthy shoots for cutting the cuttings. Prepare Growing pots with looser Potting soil that must not be too nutritious.
Insert the cuttings about three to four centimeters deep into the substrate. You can grow several shoots in one pot. The soil must be kept evenly moist, but must never get too wet. Put the pots in a bright and warm place. However, the shoots cannot tolerate direct sun.
Once the cuttings are rooted, continue caring for the epiphylls like adult plants.
Tips
If the Epiphyllum does not bloom, it is often because the plant was not allowed to hibernate sufficiently. Leaf cacti also only bloom when they are more than five years old.
