The best time to cut moss roses

Like all roses, moss roses are generally only cut in early spring. In the process you remove all the shoots that

appear.

You should also thin out moss roses so that the individual shoots are as airy as possible. It is important that you leave sufficiently older shoots, as moss roses only bloom on old wood.

Cut moss roses correctly

Always cut the branches just above an outward-facing one eye away. The cut should be made at a slight angle so that rainwater can run off. Otherwise, the moisture will penetrate the interfaces and lead to rot.

Only use sharp rose scissors to cut moss roses so that the cuts do not fray.

Cut once blooming moss roses

Treat moss roses only once that bloom like wild roses. They are not cut annually, but only every two to three years.

When pruning, make sure that approximately the same number of old shoots, previous shoots and new shoots remain on the shrub.

Cut the twice-blooming moss rose

You cut these varieties every year. The shoots are shortened to a third.

After the first flowering, you should cut off dead inflorescences as soon as possible. This will prevent ovaries from developing, which would rob the plant of unnecessary strength. It also stimulates a strong second flowering period.

After the second flowering, let the flowers stand so that rose hips can form. These are popular with birds, but can also be used in the kitchen.

Rejuvenate moss roses

Rejuvenate very old moss roses that are completely out of shape every three to five years. All the very old shoots are cut out. The moss rose blooms a little less the following year.

Tips

Moss roses are true easy-carebut a little prone to mildew. Only water these roses from below so that you do not wet the leaves as much as possible. The best time to water is in the morning.
