A new lawn is being laid and now the question arises of how much new earth is needed here. The following article explains what to consider when using lawn soil for rolling lawns or sowing.
Which soil is suitable?
If a new lawn is to be created or an existing one is to be renewed, the soil that is present here should be checked first. Because not everyone is suitable for a lush, green lawn that every garden owner actually wants. The lawn substrate used should therefore have the following properties:
- Check the subsurface
- Mix in compost and sand in loamy soil
- add more humus in sandy soil
- then the lawn substrate
- high content of compost and humus
- 50% compost
- 30 - 40% humus
- Rest of the substrate made of sand
Due to the composition, the plants not only get all the nutrients they need right from the start need, through the addition of sand, the soil is also loose and can be used as drainage to serve. In this way, excess water can run off quickly and there is no waterlogging. In this way, the new plants can develop optimally from the sowing and a turf can grow well.

It is often the case that the area on which the lawn is to be laid is not entirely straight. The first thing to do is to work on the subsurface and straighten it so that there are no more holes. In addition, as described above, the lower layer should be prepared. Only then is the layer of the prepared or purchased turf soil applied. However, the following can apply to the preparation of the topsoil for all lawns:
- Loosen loamy soil with quartz or river sand
- about 8-10 liters of sand per 100 m² of surface
- no humos are required here
- Incorporate bark humus into sandy, light soil
- about 8-10 liters of humus per 100 m² of surface
- Put the prepared substrate for lawn on this area
How much turf soil is necessary?
Lawn plants are not deep-rooted. Therefore, the substrate used, which is placed on top of the existing topsoil, does not have to be applied very high. So it is completely sufficient if this is placed between 0.5 and 1.5 cm high. This also depends on whether turf is laid with soil or the lawn is sown. So when sowing, the layer should be higher than with turf. Then, regardless of this preparation, the following amount of substrate is applied:
- 10 liters of finished or self-made turf soil per m² of surface
- distribute the turf evenly
Tip: After the substrate has been applied, you should let the soil rest for about two to three weeks before sowing the lawn or abandoning the turf. In this way, the area can sit down accordingly and be straightened again at various points if holes have been made, for example due to fallen rain.
