The fence

Children are curious and want to discover the world. If the garden is not fenced in, sooner or later you will be on your way to explore the area. Therefore, you should enclose your property with a child-proof fence:

  • This should ideally be 1.40 meters high.
  • With a wooden fence, the slats must have a maximum distance of 11 centimeters. The small head is guaranteed not to fit through and can get stuck unintentionally.
  • For children who like to climb, tapered fence pickets can be dangerous. Wrought iron fences or the popular Hunter fence are therefore not considered suitable for children.

Occasionally check the fence for damage. Kids can get painful injuries on protruding nails or sharp edges.

Garden pond and pool

If small children get face under water, they fall into a kind of paralysis with a breath lock. They drown quietly, that is, they do not attempt to rescue themselves and do not cry out for help. Therefore, even low water levels can be fatal for them. For this reason, never let children play unsupervised near unsecured bodies of water!

However, you do not have to do without a garden pond or pool, because water areas can be made child-safe. Steeply sloping Embankments and slippery stone slabs when wet can already be avoided during the installation. Even if it obscures the undisturbed view of the pond: Through a pond fence, ideally paired with a pond guard, they successfully keep little explorers away from the seductive, but dangerous, wet remote.

You can also fence and / or cover the pool. A pool alarm offers additional security. This device perceives larger wave movements that occur if a person falls into the water.

Free spaces to run around

Children love to run and frolic. This allows garden tools like Rake and shovel become an unintended source of danger. You should therefore clear out all equipment immediately after the Gardening path.

Safe play equipment

A swing with a climbing frame or a play tower are the absolute highlight of the garden for many children. However, it is essential to ensure that it is set up securely and check the floor anchors regularly. When purchasing, the blue GS mark guarantees quality.

Tips

Vessels filled with water such as tubs and Rain barrels(€ 3.68 at Amazon *) represent an often underestimated source of danger. Secure all containers that the child could fall into with sturdy covers.
