The growth diversity of the creeping spindle

The crawling properties of the crawler spindle have been anchored in the name. Indeed, one can describe their slow but dense growth behavior with this attribute. Depending on the species, the versatile plant has the specialty of crawling along the ground as well as vertically through adhesive roots. It is therefore most often used as a weed-inhibiting ground cover or as an ornamental, easy-care wall greening.

Your hedge potential

With certain types of crawling spindle, there is a third type of cultivation: the hedge. Some varieties become about 40 to 100 cm high when they are allowed to grow into a bush. That is not a lot and it is not used as a hedge to protect the property from view. However, where low hedges are required as accurate borders, crawling spindles are ideal. Because they have some advantages:

  • slow, dense growth
  • Due to its limited height, it is ideal for low borders
  • relatively undemanding in terms of location
  • decorative leaf panaching, pretty fruit decorations

All types of crawlers have in common their dense growth. This is an enormous advantage for the formation of hedges, especially with low beds or grave borders. This is because a very neat contour can be achieved with a regular cut. In addition, this means that a cut is rarely necessary, even if the hedge is to be very clearly shaped. These are ideal conditions for anyone who can or does not want to spend a little time on care.

Exclusively for low hedges

The limited growth height predestines the crawler spindle for all hedges that should not obstruct the view. Ideal uses are for example:

  • Grave borders
  • clearly structured beds
  • Front yard boundary

In the case of graves, a hedge border can play a peaceful role - the low height prevents the tombstone and the inscription from being covered at some point. The seldom necessary pruning is also very pleasant in view of the occasional grave visit.

Even with the border or front garden border, the low crawling spindle hedge allows a view of the essentials, in this case the interior plants. The often nicely varnished leaves, which show up in different colors depending on the season, and the whitish to reddish fruits also offer an attractive yet restrained visual appearance Charm.

Undemanding in terms of location

The location requirements of the creeping spindle are also low: most varieties also thrive in shady places, are lime-tolerant and only need a moderately nutrient-rich soil.
