Remove autumn leaves
Collect fallen fruit and leaves lying on the lawn regularly on. This prevents fungal spores and snow mold from developing and causing lasting damage to the grass. In addition, the damp leaves would prevent oxygen from circulating, making the lawn susceptible to disease.

A simple rake with a fan brush is sufficient to remove the leaves. You do not have to dispose of the collected leaves, provided they are free from fungi. They are well suited as warming winter protection for flower beds and when applied under hedges and bushes they rot and become valuable fertilizer.
The last cut of the lawn
Before the temperature of the ground permanently drops below ten degrees, you should mow the lawn one last time. If the temperature falls below this value, the lawn stops growing and no longer needs pruning.
Do not cut the grass too short, otherwise the frost has easy time and can damage the root system of the lawn. On the other hand, you shouldn't leave the stalks too long, otherwise they will be pressed to the ground and attacked by snow mold or fungi. The following cutting heights are recommended:
- Utility lawn: 40 millimeters
- Shadow lawn: 50 millimeters
- Ornamental lawn: 25 millimeters
- Herbal lawn: 80 millimeters
Since the clippings can no longer rot at low temperatures, you should collect them in the grass catcher of the lawnmower or break them off.
Mending damage
After mowing, damage to the lawn is clearly visible. Thoroughly water burned and dried-up areas and loosen up the soil in these areas a little. Sprinkle the damaged areas with grass seeds and press them down. Cover the sowing then with soil and water regularly until fresh green has grown back.
Apply autumn fertilizer
Rely on potassium-accentuated preparations for autumn fertilization. These ensure that the lawn becomes resistant to frost and that it survives the long winter months better. Potassium also ensures a good metabolism of the grass, so that it comes through the winter strengthened.
You should never use nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers such as those used in spring. These would stimulate growth and make the stalks susceptible to cold and sensitive.
Tips
Usually the Lawn scarified in April or May. If you notice that a layer of felt thicker than 5 millimeters has formed, you can repeat the procedure in the fall. However, the temperature should be above ten degrees for a few days. If it is already too cold, it is better to postpone this work until spring.
