Why do the leaves of camellias curl up?

Probably the most common reason for camellia's leaves to curl is too low humidity. If this is over 70 percent, then a camellia feels comfortable. However, if the humidity drops well below 70 percent, the plant rolls up its leaves in order to reduce the evaporation of moisture and not to close it dry up.

A poor water supply due to damaged or rotten roots also leaves the leaves of a camellia wither and later fall off. Other reasons are too little water, watering with calcareous (tap) water or damage caused by frost.

Possible reasons for curled sheets:

  • insufficient air humidity
  • damaged or rotten roots
  • pour too little
  • Pour with calcareous water
  • Frost damage
  • wrong time at Repot

Can I still save my camellia?

If the roots of your camellia are still intact, there is a good chance that the plant will still be saved. To determine this, you need to carefully remove the camellia from the earth. If the earth is wet, replace it. If, on the other hand, roots are rotten, the camellia will perish and you can safely dispose of the plant.

If the root ball of your camellia is completely dry, then water the plant with plenty of lime-free water. Drain the excess water. Water every day or two until the plant looks fresh again. However, it may take a few weeks for your camellia to fully recover. This also applies to any Frost damage. In this case, you should cut back damaged shoots generously.

Tips

The sooner you react to curled leaves on your camellia, the greater the chances of successfully saving the plant.
