If you maintain your garden in a mild climate, you can safely plant the shrubs outdoors.

In rough locations or when no favorable location is available, you prefer to grow Abelia in a bucket. Then you can easily overwinter the bushes in a sheltered place on the terrace or in the cool winter garden.

Plant outdoors on house walls or in sheltered locations

Plant Abelias outdoors along walls or house walls, because there they are sheltered from the wind and the temperatures usually do not drop quite as much.

How to overwinter Abelia outdoors

You should not do without winter protection in the bushes that are only partially hard. Abelias need particularly good winter protection, especially in the first year after planting.

Cover the soil with a thick blanket of fallen leaves, mature compost, or other organic material.

Use suitable materials to protect the above-ground parts of the bush from frost:

  • Reed mats
  • Bubble wrap
  • Burlap sacks
  • Garden fleece

Hibernate Abelie in the bucket

In rough locations or to be on the safe side, it is better to plant Abelia in a tub right away. You can then keep the bushes outside from spring to autumn maintain. In late autumn, place the tubs in the cool winter garden, frost-free and light.

Water the shrubs moderately but regularly, and regularly inspect the Abelia for pests. Fertilize is not necessary in winter.

In the spring you get the Abelias out of their winter quarters, put them in larger pots and slowly get them used to the fresh air again.

Tips

Abelias need moisture even in winter. Water the shrubs occasionally when the top layer of soil has dried and it hasn't frozen for at least three days.
