Propagation of cuttings
For cuttings you need certain parts of the plant. These should:
- Relatively young
- and not be lignified.

Cutting waste can be used well, which is the annual pruning incurred anyway.
If you want to cut cuttings from the mother plant, you should do so in winter or early spring. Choose a spot that is not directly in the field of view and use a sharp, clean knife to cut. It is cut off at the point where the old wood merges with the fresh.
Raising cuttings
Old flower pots are suitable as a growing vessel, as they are sufficiently deep. Mix normal Potting soil with a little compost, so that there are enough nutrients in the substrate.
Alternatively, you can bring the cuttings directly into a bed or into the ground at the future location. The distance should be eight inches here.
- Shorten the cutting to a length of 15-20 centimeters.
- Free the shoot from the leaves in the lower area.
- Put it in the substrate so that only the upper leaves stick out.
- Water well.
- Water every two days so that the offspring can quickly grow roots.
After about three months, pinch the tip. This will force the cutting to develop side shoots. As soon as these have grown vigorously, the tip is cut off. Keep pruning the plants regularly so that they continue to grow bushy.
Trees multiply through subsidence
Alternatively, some hedge plants can be propagated by means of lowerers. This method is very simple and requires little effort.
- Bend individual, young and not lignified shoots downwards in an arc.
- The end of the drive protrudes upwards in a U-shape.
- Remove leaves in the area that rests on the earth.
- Fix with tent hooks.
- Cover the fixation point with substrate and press firmly.
After two to three months, new roots form below the fixation point. Now separate the offspring from the mother plant and place the small plant in its final location.
Tips
Even taking roots in the water works very well with some hedge plants. To do this, simply put the cuttings in a container filled with water and place it in a bright place. As soon as the roots are five centimeters long, you can plant the cuttings out.
