Propagate fan palms from seeds

You can grow a fan palm from seeds. You can get seeds at the garden center. In our part of the world, it is rather unlikely that an existing fan palm itself will produce seeds.

When is the best time to sow?

Unlike many other plants, you sow fan palms in late summer or autumn.

How to propagate fan palms from seeds

All Palm seeds are hard-shelled and must pre-swell. This increases the chance that the seeds will actually germinate.

Put out one seed per pot. Cover it with a thin layer of substrate and lightly press the soil down.

It takes several months for the seeds of the fan palm to germinate. If you are lucky, you will find out in the following spring whether you have successfully propagated the fan palm.

After the emergence of the cotyledons, remove the plastic cover if necessary. Don't keep the seedlings too moist, but be careful not to let them dry out either.
