The foundation

For the drywall, you should a foundation put on, which provides stability. Dig a four-inch deep trench and fill it with a gravel-mineral mixture. Compress it thoroughly and fill the gap with construction sand.

Piling up the wall

For this you need a variety of natural stones of different sizes. You can use collected stones or purchase materials from a hardware store or a gravel pit.

Well suited are:

  • Granite,
  • Sandstone,
  • Gneiss,
  • Law,
  • Limestone.

If possible, these natural stones should not be hewn and should have an irregular shape. This means that they can be easily stacked one inside the other and the garden wall has the desired rustic look.

It continues as follows:

  • In the case of straight walls, clamp one for orientation Guideline.(€ 7.13 at Amazon *)
  • Sort the stones by size.
  • The main role is played by large stones, which you lay out as the first row. These are pressed a little into the construction sand for better stability.
  • Place large stones with a little space between them and make sure that they are stably tilted.
  • You fill the gaps with smaller stones, which also have to be tilted well.
  • Check the stability of the drywall again and again. Nothing should wobble or appear unstable.

Plant the natural stone wall

The finished wall does not have to remain bare. On the contrary: Greening with deep-rooted plants ensures the mortar-free masonry.

Specialized in the special living conditions of the wall such as:

  • Stonecrop,
  • Soapwort,
  • Cushion bellflower,
  • Loop herb,
  • Houseleek

thrive in nutrient-poor soil that you put in the drywall joints. It is enough if the crack is about two fingers wide.

Since most of the commercially available plants are too big for these crevices, they are divided and placed in a horizontal position on the substrate layer. Then fill in some more soil and water it.

Tips

You can erect dry stone walls up to one meter high yourself. However, if the wall is to be higher or is adjacent to a sidewalk, it is better to consult a specialist when building it.
