Instructions: Plant rubber boots step by step

You shouldn't just dump soil in your boots and plant plants. Planting wellies also takes some preparation. To do this you need:

Tool:

  • Cordless drill or similar
  • a small shovel
  • Sandpaper (if you want to paint the rubber boots)
  • Brush (see above)

Material:

  • rubber boots
  • Pebbles
  • Earth
  • Paint and primer if you want to paint the boots

1. Provide drainage

Drainage is the be-all and end-all of a good flower pot, even if it is in the shape of rubber boots. Now you may find that you are not watering too much and therefore do not need drainage. But... you don't want to put your boots in the apartment, do you? It is raining outside and the rainwater must be able to drain away, otherwise the plants will rot due to waterlogging.
So grab the cordless drill and use it to drill several holes in the sole of your rubber boots.

2. Optional: painting

Wellington boots are inherently waterproof, that's what they're there for. Therefore, the paint serves less to protect them from moisture and more of a decorative purpose. If you like it colorful or shabby chic, you can paint your boots nicely.

To do this, first roughen the smooth surface all around so that the color also lasts. Now you can either paint the rubber boots in one color or you can spray a white background color and then shade it with other colors, so that a shabby effect is created.

3. Fill boots

Fill the boots one-third with pebbles. These ensure stability and good drainage. Then add another third of the garden compost to the boot.

4. Put plants

Now put the plants in the boots and fill the space with soil. Make sure that there is at least two centimeters of pouring space between the rubber boot edge and the earth.

Tips

If the boots are not made of rubber, you should put a plastic bag with drainage holes on the pebbles and place in this soil and plant. This is how you slow down the degradation process of the boot material.
