Ilex is deep-rooted

Ilex has a heart root and is one of the deep roots. This is why the holly is so suitable as a hedge planting. You can put them close to sidewalks without fear of the roots lifting up the pavement slabs later.

Transplant ilex outdoors

Ilex can be transplanted relatively well as long as the roots are not that big and reach too deep into the earth. It is more difficult to move an older holly in the garden. In order not to damage the roots too much, you should proceed in two steps.

  • Cut off side roots in spring
  • dig a new planting hole in autumn
  • Earth with humus and Horn shavings(€ 32.93 at Amazon *) enrich
  • Dig up Ilex completely
  • carefully place in the new planting hole
  • Do not bend the main root!
  • Step on earth carefully
  • water well

In spring, prick off the soil around the ilex and with it the side roots. This gives the shrub the opportunity to establish new roots.

In autumn, you will then dig up the entire ilex. He doesn't mind so much now if you cut off part of the lower root because you can't get it out of the ground. However, the main part of the heart root must be preserved and must not be damaged when it is moved.

Repot the Ilex in the bucket

If you have Ilex in the bucket maintain, make sure that the pot is as deep as possible and sufficiently wide. Only then can the root spread properly.

A drainage in the pot is strongly recommended, as the roots of the Ilex do not tolerate waterlogging at all. But they mustn't dry out either, so you have to water them regularly.

The best time to repot Ilex in the bucket is late spring.

Tips

Most Ilex varieties are hardy. However, this does not apply to the Japanese holly Ilex crenata. This is only partially winter-proof and needs adequate winter protection outdoors.
