How do I recognize a sick tree?
Even as a layperson, you can easily see larger holes in the trunk or branches. Always keep this in eye and observe whether there are changes here that indicate pest infestation or disease. Warning signs are expanding cracks in the bark, wounds, rotting areas or visible fungus growth.

If you are unsure whether the tree is seriously ill, you should get help from an arborist.
When can the tree be felled?
As a rule, this work should, in accordance with the Federal Nature Conservation Act, between the 30th September and 1. March to be run. You can obtain precise information about the regulations in force in your municipality from the public order office.
Where can the tree be disposed of?
The wood, chopped up and dried for at least two years, is a nice supply for the garden fireplace or the fire bowl. This is the simplest form of recycling, as branches and twigs with a diameter of over 15 centimeters must not be disposed of with the green waste. The regional recycling center does not buy this wood either.
If there is a lot of waste, you can dispose of the felled tree as follows:
- For large trees, it is worth ordering a special container for wood waste.
- Alternatively, composting plants accept the material directly on site.
- The leaves, which you should pick up very carefully from diseased plants, move into the container for green waste.
Can't I compost the leaves myself?
This is not advisable, because many fungal pathogens form so stable permanent spores that they are still active even after several years. If you apply the fertilizer in your garden, you also involuntarily distribute the spores and these infect new plants again via the roots.
In professional composting plants, temperatures of over 70 degrees can be reached after just a few days. Under such conditions, almost all harmful pathogens and plant diseases are reliably killed.
Tips
Homeowners who fail to cut down old or diseased trees on time may be held liable for possible damage. You should therefore check older trees in particular regularly.
