Keep orchids on the windowsill

Proper light and temperature conditions - tips for the right location

The most beautiful Orchid species are at home in the rainforests of this earth. In the humid and warm climate they sit high up on the branches, while the dense canopy of leaves softens the blazing sun. The closer the framework conditions on the windowsill come up to these criteria, the more vital the royal flowers thrive:

• A light to partially shaded location, without direct sunlight
• Warmth Temperatures with an average level of 18 to 25 degrees Celsius
• A high humidity of more than 50 percent

The light requirement is perfectly covered at the west and east windows. A place at the south window is conceivable, provided that shading takes place at lunchtime, in the form of an awning or curtain. Individual ways of how Dendrobium kingianum or calanthe vestita also accept the windowsill on the north side of the house.

Useful accessories facilitate maintenance

Regardless of which orchid your gardener's heart beats for, this will work care on the windowsill more easily by hand with these accessories:

• Humidifiers, indoor fountains or bowls filled with water for high humidity
• Thermometer to monitor the local temperature
• Hygrometer to determine the humidity around the window sill

If your orchid gets too hot on the windowsill in summer, a small air conditioner provides cooling. If this investment is too expensive for you, line your planter with sphagnum. By keeping the moss continuously moist, the evaporating water cools the heated orchid down a little. At the same time, the humidity remains at a high level.
