Oleander is not hardy

In principle, older and therefore more robust oleanders can tolerate them Temperatures of up to minus five degrees Celsius - but only for a very short time and in no case in combination with ground frost and other hardships. In other words: The oleander, which is adapted to the mild Mediterranean climate, is neither winter nor frost hardy and If you plant it out in the garden, a typical German winter would most likely not survive. Hence will We always recommend keeping them in a bucketin order to be able to move the shrub into winter quarters in good time. A dark overwintering - for example in a cellar - does not necessarily harm the plant, it just needs to be frost-free.

Hibernate oleanders outside in protected locations?

It is well known that the winters in Germany are not equally severe everywhere, so that planting out can be tried in some regions such as the German wine-growing areas. So if you live in the Rhine-Moselle area and the winters are rather mild in your area: give it a try. For such an attempt, however, it is better to choose an older, already hardened plant and

pack them well, for example with gardening fleece and / or bubble wrap. It also doesn't get terribly cold every winter, some of these seasons remain mild. In months like this, you don't necessarily have to give the oleander away, you can leave it outside - As soon as the temperatures drop, however, it is important to react quickly and move the shrub to the cellar. Of course, this only works if it is cultivated in a tub.

Temporary planting out over the summer is possible

However, you can also use your oleander temporarily - i.e. H. limited in time - and including a planter plant out in the garden. Only the plant pot should be removed so that the shrub is only in the ground in the plant pot. This pot usually has holes in the bottom so that the roots of the oleander can grow through and supply themselves with water from the earth. As soon as it gets too cold, the shrub can easily be dug up again and overwinter under cold house conditions.

Tips

Do not move your oleander into winter quarters too early: the longer the plant is outside, the more it hardens and also survives the months with little light. The shrub only needs to be cleared in frosty periods.
