The best time to share bow hemp

The bow hemp can be increased both by leaf cuttings and, especially in older and therefore larger specimens, by division. Since the plant forms offshoots and daughter rosettes, the last form of reproduction is naturally particularly easy. In principle, a division is possible at any time of the year, but spring is best for this. When the temperatures rise and the solar radiation becomes more intense again, the bow hemp also grows stronger. It is also useful to have the division in the train of annual repotting to undertake. This saves the plant multiple stress from frequent potting and potting.

Which pot size is the right one?

Sansevieria have fine roots, depending on the individual specimen, more or less thick rhizomes and generally not too pronounced root balls. This is why you shouldn't use a tall, slim pot for bow hemp - it would soon tip over, as the plant becomes top-heavy with age. Instead, choose a wider planter, but not much wider than the root ball itself. Sansevieria feel more comfortable in tighter vessels.

Share bow hemp - a step-by-step guide

Now that you have selected the right pot, take a sharp knife, disinfect it with alcohol and proceed as follows:

  • Poke out the bow hemp to be divided.
  • Carefully remove the adhering earth.
  • Slightly pull the roots and rhizomes apart if the root ball is too compact.
  • Take a close look at the plant: where are the offshoots and daughter rosettes?
  • This is what you prefer to remove, using the knife if necessary.
  • Otherwise, simply divide the entire plant, including the roots.
  • Each part should have at least one (preferably more) shoots.
  • Plant the cuts now in separate pots with a suitable substrate.

Now it's time to be patient - Bow hemp grows slowly and takes a few years to grow back into a large and voluminous plant.
