Material, tools and preparatory work
Manufacturers of grass trimmers usually offer their models in both versions. Except for the cutting technology, these devices are the same. This has the advantage that you can exchange the cutter head for a thread dispenser without worrying about compatibility. The following materials and tools are required:
- Thread dispenser with bobbin and cutting thread
- 1 angle with 25 mm leg length, 13 mm width and 2 mm thickness
- Bench grinder
- 2 Torx pan head screws, screwdriver

The angle fulfills the function of a knife to shorten a cutting line that is too long when the engine is running. For this purpose, the angle on the bench grinder is given the necessary grind. This measure is recommended to protect the plastic cover on the mower head from excessive wear, because a line that is too long will hit it.
Converting the grass trimmer - instructions
In order for the knife disc to be exchanged for a thread dispenser, both components must have the same receptacle. Some manufacturers use square mounts, while other manufacturers use round mounts. For this reason, a thread dispenser from another manufacturer turns out to be incompatible even if all other dimensions fit.
You can pull off the knife unit or lever it out of the anchorage with the screwdriver. This step requires the greatest effort when converting the grass trimmer. Then insert the new thread dispenser precisely onto the square or round metal bracket in the center.
Finally, take the sharpened angle and screw it to the edge of the mower head. If the mowing line is pulled a little too far out of the bobbin, the self-made knife cuts off the excess length with the first turn. In this way, the cutting line only trims the lawn and protects the protective cover.
Tips
Of the Thread change at the Grass trimmer(€ 34.90 at Amazon *) is not a difficult undertaking. Soaking the new cutting line in water for a day makes it more flexible to wind it up. Pay particular attention to the correct winding direction, which is indicated by an arrow on the bobbin.
