Which variety is recommended?

Depending on your taste, you have the choice between green or white asparagus. The cultivation of the green variant is a little less laborious, as the variety does not have to be piled up. It also contains more nutrients because it grows on the surface. Asparagus is either male, female, or hermaphrodite. Inquire about male plants at gardening stores. These grow faster and are considered to be more productive.

Asparagus growing instructions

  1. thoroughly remove roots and weeds from the area where the asparagus bed is to be created
  2. loosen the soil with a rake
  3. dig a trench about 25 cm deep and 20-30 cm wide
  4. Now work a layer of compost, for example from rotted manure, into the soil. Pour some excavated material over it to avoid contact of the roots with the compost
  5. Now place the young plants in the trench at a distance of at least 40 cm. In doing so, you spread the roots like a spider
  6. fill in the trench with the excavated material
  7. give something right after planting Complete fertilizer on the bed and water the cuttings extensively

Asparagus cultivation- this is what you need to pay attention to

Here are two more tips for further maintenance:

Do not exceed the harvest date

The 24th June, the so-called St. John's Day, ends the asparagus harvest. After this date, green asparagus will need time to recover from growth and recharge so that it can regain edible stalks in the next year.

Be sure to remove the berries

While the process is very complicated, you can use the seeds to propagate your green asparagus. The seeds are harvested in autumn when the asparagus leaves have turned yellow. But even if you don't want to use the berries for propagation, you should definitely take them from the asparagus. Otherwise, the vegetables will use the seeds to spread on their own. In the next spring, shoots will appear beyond your ditch, which may not be wanted.
