Water requirement

Keep the soil constantly moist during the summer months. Waterlogging must be avoided at all costs, so pour away excess liquid in the saucer after a few minutes. Always use lime-free water, for example rainwater, as Arbutus does not tolerate lime.

How is fertilization done?

You can use commercially available fertilizers for fertilization Complete fertilizergiven approximately three weeks apart.

Strawberry trees cultivated outdoors provide you with fully ripe compost in April and July. Further fertilization is not necessary here.

How do you repot?

Pay attention to the following points during this maintenance measure:

  • Repotting takes place in spring.
  • The substrate used must be free of lime.
  • Mix commercially available Potting soil with Quartz sand.(€ 14.90 at Amazon *)
  • Choose a planter with a good vent and cover the vent hole with a pottery shard.
  • A drainage layer made Expanded clay,(€ 16.36 at Amazon *) to avoid waterlogging is recommended.

You should not transplant trees that are growing outdoors, because the strawberry tree does not like that at all. Often the plants no longer thrive well.

Can the sapling be cut?

Arbutus is relatively easy to cut. In early spring you can cut back those shoots that do not bear fruit. After the eventual harvest in late summer, they will become too long Branches cut back. The strawberry tree is also not offended by the shortening of individual, disturbing shoots during the growing season.

How do you hibernate?

  • Planted strawberry trees in Germany require adequate winter protection.
  • Place potted plants in a room that is as cool and bright as possible.
  • Arbutus also feels at home in the winter garden during the cold season.
  • Water only in sips so that the substrate does not dry out completely.
  • There is no fertilization at all.

Pests and diseases

Arbutus is extremely robust and is rarely attacked by vermin. Only aphids, which can be controlled well with environmentally friendly means, can occasionally occur.

Sometimes excessive leaf shedding becomes a problem. As an evergreen plant, Arbutus loses foliage throughout the year, as this is the only way new leaves can form. By:

  • Growth problems
  • too frequent or too infrequent watering
  • unfavorable weather conditions
  • too calcareous soil with high pH

the tree gets under stress. Then an excessive number of leaves turn yellow and are thrown off. If you fix the cause, the plant will usually recover quickly.

They occur very rarely Leaf spot disease or mildew on. These fungal diseases can be combated well with suitable means.
