Sometimes, however, the plants reproduce all by themselves, such as the breeding leaf, a species of the thick-leaf family. Other types of thick leaf can be propagated from leaf or head cuttings, such as this Rosette thick leaf. If you have a thick leaf that forms branches, use new shoots as cuttings. The best time to cut cuttings is in spring.

How do I cut cuttings from my thick leaf?

Cut leaf cuttings as deep as possible out of the rosette (with thick leaves growing in rosettes) or directly on the trunk. Remember that rosettes that have just bloomed will die off. These are no longer suitable for propagation. In this case it is better to use a different rosette.

After drying, insert the sheet directly into it Cactus soil, however, it should still look about a third out of the earth. Place your cutting in a bright, warm place out of direct sunlight. Now you need a little patience until a small plant has grown out of it. A head or shoot cuttings grow a little faster. Use a complete rosette or an approx. 10 cm long shoot.

A specialty: the propagation of the breeding leaf

That Breeding leaf has a very special kind of reproduction. So you don't have to worry about offspring from this species. At the leaf margins of the breeding leaf (in some species even only on the tip of the leaf) tiny little plants, also called kindels, grow. These daughter plants fall away from the mother plant as soon as they are sufficiently rooted and can exist independently.

The essentials in brief:

  • slow propagation by leaf cuttings
  • a little faster: head or shoot cuttings
  • best time for cutting cuttings: spring
  • sowing very time consuming
  • Breeding leaf: propagation by Kindel

Tips

Sowing the thick leaf is very time-consuming. If you don't have a thick leaf yet, you can try sowing.
