Properly fertilize oleander flowers

Oleander flowers are hermaphroditic, d. H. both female and male, which is why any oleander is suitable for breeding. In fact, it is even sufficient to pollinate the flowers of a plant with one another, but remove foreign genetic material a second increases, firstly, the fertilization rates and, secondly, those arising from the seed Varieties. So take at least two oleander bushes with you as many flower buds as possible. Watch them closely because as soon as they open, grab a fine brush and transfer the pollen from the flowers of one plant to the other and vice versa. Professional growers pack the hand-fertilized flowers so that they are not accidentally cross-pollinated by insects. However, this measure is not necessary in the hobby area.

Let the pods ripen and collect seeds

Whether your efforts have been successful can only be seen after flowering: the oleanders form elongated fruits off, there is a good chance that fertilization worked. Now, however, the more difficult part follows, because in our climate the pods often do not ripen, which is why they seeds contained therein not to sowing suitable. So make sure that the oleander fruits can ripen, for example by placing them in the warm and bright winter garden in the cooler autumn. If you don't have one, the living room will too. However, it is important that it is not only warm there, but also bright - the light streaming in through the window is not enough in autumn, so it makes sense to attach plant lamps. Once the pods are ripe, you can collect the seeds and sow them right away. Ripe oleander fruits are brown, appear dried up and eventually burst open all by themselves.

First let the collected seeds soak in lukewarm water for about 24 hours. Only then is the sowing carried out on a less nutrient-poor Potting soilThe seeds should either not be covered at all or only very thinly covered with sieved earth. Keep the substrate slightly moist and make sure that the seed tray is in a bright and warm place. A cover or an indoor greenhouse increases the chances that the seeds will actually germinate.
