When is the best time to plant?

Spring is the ideal time to plant ferns. Especially sensitive species or Varieties should be planted preferentially at this time of the year. You will then have the opportunity to take root in a relaxed manner until the first winter. More robust ferns such as the bracken can be put outside on frost-free days all year round.

Where should ferns be planted?

As forest plants, all ferns love humus-rich and loose soil. Furthermore, the chosen substrate should permanently have the following properties:

  • nutritious
  • slightly acidic to neutral
  • Low-lime to lime-free
  • sandy-loamy
  • moderately moist

Which plant partners are suitable?

The majority of the fern species are considered to be shade-loving. For this reason, those plants that have similar preferences are particularly suitable as plant partners. These include shadow grasses, shadow perennials and shadow trees.

Ferns work harmoniously under and next to conifers such as pines and larches. These have deep roots and a light crown. Perfect for ferns! Other good planting partners are plants such as:

  • Lilies (especially Turkish lilies)
  • Crocuses
  • Märzenbecher
  • Hostas
  • Silver candles
  • Elven flowers
  • snowdrop
  • Daffodils

Tips & Tricks

If you want to plant a pre-grown fern in a pot outdoors: Set the fern a little deeper than it was in the pot before. Water it well and add a layer of mulch to it.
