What is a rock garden anyway?

Plan rock garden

  • Waterlogging is to be avoided at all costs. Give the selected area for your rock garden a drainage layer made of coarse gravel.
  • A mixture of sand, gravel and earth forms the perfect substrate.
  • Use stones that are found in the area. It is advisable to use a uniform stone material in order to achieve a harmonious overall picture. Larger boulders are very attractive: you can lean higher perennials decoratively against them.
  • Speaking of perennials: of course, you have to choose plants that can cope with powerful sun and drought or even long for it. It is also nice when the perennials ensure a blaze of color until autumn.

These perennials are suitable for a rock garden

Below is a list of perennials that are made for rock gardens:

  • Houseleek (diverse shapes, insensitive to drought, colorful)
  • Gartensilberwurz (charming carpet-like mats, flowers in May and June, feathery seed heads after flowering)
  • Autumn-Saxifrage (All year round brownish-glossy leaves, white veils of flowers in autumn, good for shady, dry locations, e.g. in the entrance area)
  • Sedum hens (robust and easy to care for, intense red foliage possible, flowers in white, pink or carmine red)
  • Soapwort (flowers from July until well into autumn, light pink, carnation-like flowers)
  • Carpet Myrthenaster (tolerates drought, flowers white in September and October)
  • White stonecrop (ground cover, very thick leaves - green in summer, copper-red in autumn)
  • Thyme (diverse leaf variants in white, green or gray)
