Oleander is not hardy

Like all plants native to the Mediterranean region, the oleander is only partially hardy. That means it can go up to temperatures of up to minus five degrees Celsius - provided it is an older and therefore more robust specimen - stay outside, but freeze away in colder and more prolonged frosty temperatures. For this reason, planting oleanders in the garden in the form of a hedge is not a good idea - it would just freeze away after just a slightly colder winter.

Hibernate Mediterranean plants properly

Instead, you overwinter oleanders best under cold house conditions, which does ______________ mean:

  • cool at about five degrees Celsius
  • Frost free
  • as bright as possible
  • Bright stairwells, unheated rooms or winter gardens, garden houses or sheds are ideal (only none made of sheet metal!) ...
  • with a hibernation of just above zero point also dark rooms (e.g. B. Keller) come into question

Oleander should be brought into winter quarters as late as possible and cleared out again as early as possible in spring. Also, don't forget the plant to water regularly.

Design options with oleander in the bucket

However, you don't have to do without a lush, leafy and wonderfully blooming oleander hedge - you just shouldn't plant it out. Instead, simply arrange oleanders grown in pots so that they provide good privacy protection or delimitation for the balcony, terrace or garden. Make sure, however, that the individual plants are not too close together: Oleander needs space and air, otherwise there is a risk immediately a pest invasion for example through Spider mites or scale insects.

Tips

At the Cutting the oleander you shouldn't cut it back too much (or this only if it is unavoidable for various reasons) and above all do not touch the two-year-old shoots. Oleander mainly blooms on last year's wood, which is why you can quickly deprive yourself of the magical bloom by cutting too hard.
