Plan, plant and care for balcony flowers correctly

The location and growth conditions differ greatly between the garden area and the balcony, not least due to the fact that flowers in plants always grow in a restricted manner and regular, careful care need. In return, however, the microclimate is on a sheltered balcony - especially if it is covered - better suited for many exotic species because it is warmer and less exposed to the external weather conditions exposed.

Suitable species

Basically you can do all of them on the balcony flower that you also plant in the garden - you only need the appropriate space for very large perennials. One up to two meters high delphinium or you cannot keep a hydrangea bush in a balcony box, such species need a large container. As a result, the choice of species depends primarily on how big your balcony is and what light conditions prevail there. At

sunny and warm locations (mainly on south-facing balconies), other types of flowers feel more comfortable than in one shady Cookie.

Planters

When it comes to planters, there are no limits to your imagination: You can put together a tub garden from different DIY planters or you can be creative and misuse other vessels: the old zinc tub is just as suitable for planting colorful flowers as the bakery box or the discarded wicker basket. You should only make sure that excess irrigation and rainwater can run off unhindered - waterlogging is fatal for most plants.

Design and arrangement

You can also get creative when it comes to the arrangement:

  • Plant ladders can be set up and planted on the balcony walls.
  • You can also attach the planters directly to the wall.
  • Both standing, climbing or hanging plants thrive here.
  • It is best to plant hanging species in hanging baskets.
  • You can arrange large and small pots on the floor, a ledge or the table.
  • Even a small raised bed fits on many balconies.

Tips

Always make sure that balcony flowers have good drainage in the pot, and they must be regularly and sufficiently supplied with water and nutrients. Planters with water storage and Slow release fertilizer help you with plant care.
