Verticillium wilt - tips on diagnosis and control

Fungal spores of the genus Verticillium get into the maple through the ground and clog the ducts. Visible symptoms of an infection are withered leaves and dry branches in places. The disease spreads from the base to the tip, so that an Acer palmatum ultimately dies. If you cut through the affected branches, you can see dark brown, ring-shaped discoloration. Effective fungicides are not yet available. How To Fight Verticillium Disease:

  • Cut back all diseased shoots down to the healthy wood
  • Burn the clippings or dispose of them in household waste
  • Maple transplant to a new location

. The more permeable and airy the earth, the better the chances that the sick maple will regenerate on its own.

Detecting and combating powdery mildew - this is how it works

Deeply slit leaves in beautiful colors are the most beautiful ornament of the Acer palmatum. How devastating when the ornamental leaves are covered with a floury-gray fungal lawn as a result of the infection mildew. As the process progresses, the leaves turn brown and sadly fall to the ground. It doesn't have to come to that, because you can fight the disease with fresh milk. That is how it goes:

  • In the first step, cut off all infected leaves and shoots
  • Add 125 ml of fresh milk to 1 liter of rainwater, supplemented with a drop of washing-up liquid

Fill the solution into a hand sprayer. At intervals of 2 to 3 days, spray the remaining leaves on the upper and lower sides with the milk water until symptoms of the disease no longer appear.

Tips

The symptoms for Verticillium wilt and Frost damage look confusingly similar at first glance. There is one crucial difference: wilt fungi let a maple slowly die off in places. Frostbite causes leaves to dry up, fallen leaves and limp shoots on the entire plant overnight.
