Buy or cut gerberas at the right time
If the gerbera is cut too early or too late, it is not suitable as a cut flower. Only buy gerberas when the outer tubular flowers are open but the inner ones are still closed. If all tubes are full blooms cut flowers will only stay in the vase for a short time. If all tubular flowers are still closed, there is a risk that the flower will not open at all.

The delicate, hairy stems offer a good attack surface for bacteria and germs. So make sure it is clean if you want to enjoy your gerbera bouquet for a long time.
- Wash the vase well
- Fill with fresh water
- Add some fresh flowers
- The water level in the vase is a maximum of five centimeters
- Change water frequently
Do not add too much water to the vase
If the water level is too high, the long stems of the gerbera rot. You should therefore only fill the vase with a little water so that the stems are no more than two to three centimeters in the water. This prevents the stems from rotting.
Check the water level regularly. Do not refill the water, but replace all of the flower water. This will stop putrefactive bacteria from spreading.
Mix some fresh flowers into the irrigation water. Add some powder each time you change the water.
Prune stems more often
The delicate stems of gerberas tend to become soft in the vase. This happens when the water supply to the flowers is blocked because the water-carrying veins in the stem are blocked by bacteria or are rotten.
Cut You should therefore regularly readjust the stems. Use a sharp knife and make a longer bevel cut to allow the stem to hold more water.
Tips & Tricks
Gerbera flowers are so decorative that they also look good individually. Combine a gerbera stem with a bright flower color with a bit of binding green such as a fern leaf or a stem of ornamental asparagus.
