Poisonous hedge plants can have dire consequences

Small children in particular tend to put anything that looks interesting in their mouths. Poisonous plant parts do not always taste so unpleasant that the kids spit them out again immediately, so that curiosity can have nasty consequences.

Also poisonous are:

  • Lots of evergreen hedge plants,
  • almost all cypress species,
  • Cherry laurel,
  • Holly,
  • Liguster,
  • Forsythia.

If you are planning to plant a hedge in a garden that is regularly visited by children, you should find out at the planning stage that all bushes and trees are non-toxic.

Which hedge plants are suitable?

There are a variety of shrubs that are absolutely harmless for kids and that can be used to create extremely attractive hedges:

Art description
Canadian hemlock Robust, non-toxic alternative to the yew tree.
Ball willow Ideal for low enclosures up to one meter.
bamboo Goes well with modern Asian-style gardens.
Roses Grow very densely and impress with their flowers. However, the thorns can cause injury.
Hornbeam Impresses with its robustness and the beautiful, light green spring shoots.
European beech The foliage turns attractive after summer and stays on the tree until it sprouts in spring, so that this enclosure offers year-round privacy.
Serbian spruce Grows slim and forms opaque hedges.
Marshmallow Fits wonderfully into colorful flower hedges.
Crabapple Keep these trees the size you want, grow rather bushy, and create nice boundaries.
Field maple Deciduous, native deciduous tree that is well suited for high hedges.
Alpine currant Thrives on any soil, both in the sun and in the shade, without any problems

Tips

When planting hedges, please always note the border distance to the neighboring property. If you choose a bamboo hedge, for example, you should bear in mind that some species are runners and can become very tall.
