The choice between two options

When propagating the plane tree, you have to decide which method to use. The following are possible:

• Propagation from seeds
• Propagation with cuttings

Propagation with cuttings is common to all Sycamore species possible. The seed propagation does not succeed in the so popular maple-leaved plane tree, because as a hybrid it does not produce germinable seeds. Occasionally, however, it is observed that some can germinate here too.

Semen extraction

You will struggle to get seeds from stores. But nature is full of this splendid type of tree and therefore the procurement of seeds is no problem. In spring they show up on the plane tree blossomswhich make up about October fruit to develop.

Sycamore seeds are cold germers and have to go through a cold period before germination. This step is called stratification.

• in an open container
• alternatively to sowing store in the refrigerator

Sow in spring

Prepare for sowing in late February by getting tall pots and poor soil for the deep roots. Lime-free water is also required for watering.

• Cover the seeds with just a little soil
• Place pots in a bright and sunny place
• keep soil moistured
• Separate from a height of about 6 cm
• select the most vigorous plants in late spring
• to Feiland plants

Propagation with cuttings

You can harvest cuttings in autumn, even before the first frost announces itself. However, they are not planted until spring. The following procedure is recommended.

• Cuttings with two year old Astring are ideal
• select one of this year's shoots for this
• Tear off the load after loss of leaves, an astring should remain at the base
• Cut off the tongue of the bark and shorten the cuttings to 20 to 30 cm
• Store frost-free in winter in moist, sandy-humic soil
• loosen the soil in the garden bed in March
• Put cuttings deep in, only about 5 cm are allowed to look out
