Propagate Jerusalem artichoke by seeds

In principle, Jerusalem artichoke can be propagated by seeds. The seeds can only be removed from the blossom to harvest. In areas with a short growing season, the seeds do not ripen on the flower.

Purchased seeds are sown in the nursery bed in spring. The plants are later transplanted outdoors.

Propagate Jerusalem artichokes using tubers

The plants themselves reproduce via the tuber by producing plenty of new tubers every year. Each tuber in turn produces further offshoots.

You multiply Jerusalem artichoke by following the harvest Leave a tuber in the ground or plant in a different place. It will drive out reliably again in the next year - if it has not fallen victim to voles.

As long as the ground is not frozen, you can plant new tubers all year round. Jerusalem artichoke is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees.

Unbridled propagation

The biggest problem with Growing Jerusalem artichoke in the garden is the spread. Within a few years, the plant reproduces so strongly via the tubers that it crushes all other garden plants.

To limit the spread, dig up tubers regularly. When harvesting, make sure that no more than one tuber remains in the ground. You shouldn't overlook even very small specimens, because they will also sprout again.

Tips & Tricks

After four to five years, the soil at the Jerusalem artichoke site is depleted. Then lay out the harvested tubers in another place with nutritious soil. In this way you ensure that enough strong plants always grow back.
