What is hydroponics and how does it work?

Soil is not absolutely necessary for the healthy growth of plants - light, air, water and nutrients are much more important. The plant, on the other hand, only needs soil so that it can hold its roots in it. However, this function can be fulfilled just as well with inorganic materials such as expanded clay balls. This substrate serves the plant as a foundation, but in some forms of hydroponics it also serves as a water reservoir. However, the regular form of hydroponics provides this system:

  • The plant is in an inner pot filled with suitable granules.
  • A water level indicator is also installed in it.
  • The inner pot is placed in a planter filled with water.
  • The water level indicator shows you when it is time to water again.
  • It is always poured into the planter.
  • To the Fertilize only special fertilizers are used for hydroponics.

Which substrate is suitable for bow hemp?

Make sure that the substrate is as fine-grained as possible. Since bow hemp has very fine roots, these do not find a good hold in larger balls.

If you want to convert your bow hemp to hydroponics, so it is best to repot the plant in spring.

  • Get the bow hemp out of its pot
  • and carefully remove all soil.
  • The roots must be completely exposed.
  • Now put the bare root ball in the inner pot,
  • likewise the water level indicator
  • and fill the pot with the hydroponic substrate.
  • Make sure that all spaces are well filled.
  • To do this, carefully tap the table top with the pot.
  • Now place the inner pot in the planter.
  • Make sure that the water level indicator is at the maximum at "Minimum".
  • Only fill in in exceptional situations (for example, if you are away for a long time) more water.

Tips

Hydroponic plants are only repotted when the pot has become too small. Instead, replace the first one to two centimeters of the substrate every year and wash it out under running, clear water.
