Does valerian prefer a sunny or shady spot?

But also slightly shady locations can be considered for the valerian. It is also important that the location is warm and dry. If necessary, the valerian can also tolerate rough locations, as it is sufficiently frost-hardy.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a substrate and preparing the ground?

Valerian can cope with many soils that are not prone to extremes. When planting, make sure that the substrate meets the following requirements:

  • nutrient-rich (freshly enriched with compost)
  • relaxed
  • semi-permeable
  • pH between 5.5 and 7.0
  • profound

How and when is valerian sown?

It often turns out to be a little challenge and a test of patience to sow valerian. It is true that the seeds are different species available in the stores. But the seeds are rather poorly capable of germinating.

On top of that, the germination process takes a relatively long time. It is best to use fresh seeds that are no more than 1 year old. With increasing storage time, the seeds lose their ability to germinate.

Here are a few pointers:

  • From March / April at home in seed trays or pots
  • Seeds are light germs
  • do not cover with earth, just press down
  • keep moist
  • Germination time: 4 to 6 weeks
  • No-till (from May) seldom succeeds with a small amount of seeds

When does flowering begin and when does it end?

Anyone who sown valerian in spring or planted it as a bought seedling can see the flowers in summer. Usually the blossom in June / July and lasts for several weeks.

Tips

Since the valerian likes to form runners in advantageous locations, you should plant it in a place where it does not disturb the growth. So rather outside of flower beds.
