A perennial permanent bloomer for the garden

The single flowers on the inflorescences of the monkshood are shaped almost like a knight's helmet, hence the name of the plant. The flowering time is prolonged by the fact that not all individual flowers on one stem open at the same time. Overall, for example, the blue monkshood (Aconitum napellus) blooms from around July to September. The exact period also depends on factors such as the altitude.

Different varieties bloom at different times

Natural selection and breeding have resulted in around 300 subspecies of the monkshood. Many of them bloom in particularly striking colors, such as:

  • Blue monkshood (Aconitum napellus)
  • Yellow monkshood (Aconitum lamarckii)
  • Autumn monkshood (aconitum carmichaelii arendsii)
  • Climbing monkshood (Aconitum hemsleyanum Red Wine)

While the yellow monkshood already blooms from early summer, the appropriately named autumn monkshood brings color to it late in the year

Perennial bed. By cleverly combining different varieties, you can harvest monkshood flowers as attractive cut flowers throughout the gardening season.

Tips

If you want to use monkshood inflorescences as cut flowers, then you should use flowers cut offas soon as about 30% of the individual flowers are open. When placing it in a vase, however, please note that simply touching this highly toxic plant can lead to numbness and other complaints.
